History
A brief summary:
Our Group has been on Parkwood for over fifty years, we started meeting at Parkwood School, then moved to Deanwood School and in 1989 finally into our own building where we are today. The headquarters was built after a lot of heavy and enthusiastic fundraising and lots of committed man hours and lots of help from Royal Engineers.
Our numbers rose to nearly two hundred at one point , giving scouting to youngsters in two Beaver Colonies , three Cub Sections and a Scout Troop of fifty boys and girls with a strong venture unit of 25 young people.
At this time we also has a 48 seater coach lovingly called" Rhubarb and Custard" unfortunately this was set fire to at the storage area where it was parked , but Galleon Travel, through one of the Group contacts came to our aid and supplied us with a 56 seater for a very reasonable price.
Both coaches were used to their full advantage taking young people away to weekend and week camps and Venture expeditions into Wales, but running costs became too expensive and finally the coach was sold to a well know Kent pop band - whose name I cannot remember !!
Numbers have fallen over the years but nevertheless have remained stable and positive. This year we have been awarded a County certificate for increase in our membership over the past year. In 2015 we had an addition of a very active Sea Scout Explorer Unit (Hydra) - who have just gained Royal Navy Recognition, being given number 104 in the Country.
